Spring Is Closer Than You Think 👀
We Don't Train to Lose Weight
It might sound like a strange thing for a gym to say…
But we don't want you training just to lose body fat.
We want you training to get stronger, to build & maintain muscle, to improve your fitness, to look after your heart, bones & body as you get older, to have more energy, to learn new things, to do hard things, to have fun with good people, to walk out of the gym feeling better than when you walked in.
Can training contribute to changing your body composition? Absolutely.
But if losing body fat is your goal, your workouts shouldn't have to carry that responsibility.
Training & fat loss have different jobs
One of the most helpful mindset shifts you can make is separating the two.
Train for health, happiness & performance.
Use your nutrition to manage body fat.
When we start treating exercise primarily as a fat-loss tool, it's very easy for training to become transactional.
"How many calories did I burn?"
"Was that workout hard enough?"
"I ate too much on the weekend, so I need to train today."
"I trained five times this week. Why haven't I lost weight?"
Suddenly something that should be adding to your life starts feeling like punishment for what you ate.
We'd much rather you walk into Soul Rebel thinking:
What can my body do today?
Can I lift something heavier, move a little better, learn a new skill, get fitter, laugh with the person beside me while we're both questioning our life choices halfway through a workout?
That's a much more enjoyable relationship to have with training.
so… where does fat loss happen?
Mostly, in the kitchen.
At its simplest, losing body fat requires your body to consistently use more energy than you're consuming.
That doesn't mean starving yourself, & it doesn't mean cutting out carbs, skipping meals or surviving on salads.
It means building an eating pattern that supports your training, provides plenty of protein, fruit, vegetables & nutritious foods, while consistently providing the appropriate amount of energy for your goal.
The concept is relatively simple.
Doing it consistently is where things get harder.
Why do people get stuck?
Often, it's not because they don't know what "healthy food" looks like.
It's because Monday to Thursday looks completely different to Friday through Sunday.
Or they make changes for two weeks, don't see the result they expected, & give up.
They try to change everything at once, rather than building habits they can actually maintain.
Or sometimes there's simply a mismatch between the result someone wants and the changes they're currently willing or able to make. (That's not a criticism, I've been there myself, & it's ok!)
If achieving a particular body composition requires a level of restriction, planning or sacrifice you're not interested in making right now, that's useful information.
Your goals should fit your life, & your expectations need to fit your actions.
don’t forget the other part of the equation
Nutrition matters. Training matters. But they're not the whole picture.
How are you sleeping?
How stressed are you?
Are you recovering between sessions?
Are you moving during the rest of your day?
Are you constantly exhausted & relying on caffeine & willpower to hold everything together?
Your body doesn't experience training, nutrition, sleep, stress & recovery as completely separate things.
They all contribute to the bigger picture.
Sometimes adding another training session isn't the answer. Neither is eating less.
let training be the good bit
There is something quite freeing about taking weight loss out of your workout.
You don't need to earn your dinner, you don't need to punish yourself for the weekend, & a workout isn't unsuccessful because your watch didn't tell you that you burned enough calories.
You trained. You got stronger. You challenged your heart & lungs. You maintained or built muscle. You practised skills. You spent an hour doing something good for your body alongside other humans.
That's already a pretty bloody productive hour!
Then, if changing your body composition is important to you, we can work on that through the areas that are actually going to make the biggest difference.
need some help with the nutrition part?
This is exactly where our Nutrition Coaching can help.
Not with a crash diet or a generic meal plan, but by looking at how you're actually eating, training, sleeping & living.
We'll help identify where you're getting stuck, decide what changes will realistically move you towards your goal, & give you the accountability to stick with them long enough to actually see what happens.
Because fat loss may be simple on paper.
Making it work in real life is where coaching can help.
Your soul rebel challenge:
This month, try changing the question.
Instead of finishing a workout and asking:
"How many calories did I burn?"
Ask:
"What did that session do for my health today?"
Maybe you got stronger, maybe you improved your fitness, maybe you moved better, maybe you learnt something, maybe you had an absolute shocker but still showed up.
All of those count.
Train for health. Train for happiness. Train for performance.
Let nutrition do its job too.
Train hard.
Fuel smart.
Stay consistent.
See y'all in the gym Rebels
